Resisting Change

High-Functioning Autistic people often resist changes or have difficulties adapting​ to changes in the environment or their surroundings. Here is a list of common characteristics related.

  1. High-Functioning Autistic people are sensitive to loud or sudden sounds.

  2. High-Functioning Autistic people are sensitive to certain textures, colours or the way they are presented.

  3. High-Functioning Autistic people are sensitive to sounds, textures, tastes, smells or light.

  4. High-Functioning Autistic people have unusually high or low pain tolerance.

  5. High-Functioning Autistic people resist changes in the environment, such as people, places or objects.

  6. High-Functioning Autistic people’ emotions can pass very suddenly but they can be drawn out for a long period of time.

  7. If an emotional incident happened, it can determine the mood for a High-Functioning Autistic person's day.

  8. Sometimes, High-Functioning Autistic people will laugh, cry or throw a tantrum for no apparent reason.

  9. Sometimes, High-Functioning Autistic people may need to be left alone to release tension and frustration.

  10. Sometimes, High-Functioning Autistic people will have inappropriate touching of themselves in public situations.

  11. High-Functioning Autistic people become overwhelmed with too much verbal direction.

  12. High-Functioning Autistic people tend to either time out or break down when being reprimanded.

  13. Sometimes, High-Functioning Autistic people have difficulty transitioning from one activity to another in school.

  14. High-Functioning Autistic people have difficulty moving through a space.

  15. High-Functioning Autistic people have difficulty changing from one floor surface to another.

  16. High-Functioning Autistic people have difficulty transferring skills one area to another.

  17. High-Functioning Autistic people have difficulty waiting for their turns.

  18. High-Functioning Autistic people have extreme fear for strange or no apparent reason.

  19. High-Functioning Autistic people feel the need to fix or rearrange things.

  20. High-Functioning Autistic people cause injury to themselves.

  21. High-Functioning Autistic people have difficulty in understanding directional terms.
